New WebSite - Thursday, November 11th
We are going live with the latest version of RoosRoast on the WEB this weekend!
We have been sourcing and roasting what many think is the worlds best coffee so now it's even easier to order and you can feel good about the package its in. This site really show cases our hand printed bags which are completely unique and made out of compostable brown paper.
We hired a local design firm thedvx to build the site and the store.
They did a great job of translating what we do into web form.
My wife Kath provided the vision. (thanks babe)
So stay tuned
Thanks John Roos

coffee strength 101 is your coffee too flavory or not flavory enough? - Monday, October 4th
It's my job as a coffee roaster/seller to listen to people's stories of their coffee. After hearing many of these accounts, I'm certain there is much misconception of coffee strength vs roast degree.
Coffee strength (which you can usually measure by how much light will pass through it), depends on the ratio of water to coffee used to make the brew. Weak coffee or "over extracted" coffee would be coffee with too much water, (typically the case in most brewed coffee). Coffee that is too strong or "over extracted" has too much coffee for the amount of water. It's important to get this ratio just right so the optimal extraction can occur.
Factors such as freshness, water quality, grind, water temp, brew time also effect the taste. No matter what you do, if the coffee isn't freshly roast or the water is nasty, you're going to get nasty coffee. But then again that may be your thing. You may be that person that loves tire store coffee because it tastes like what you love about car tires. (Maybe it's that slow cook glass pot on the coffee warmer reduction.)
But regardless, you can make dark roast coffee weak and light roast coffee strong, depending on how you brew it, the grind, etc. So when people are asking which beans to buy and tell me they don't like strong coffee, I just tell them, "don't make it strong then!"
I will add that over roasted coffee, which I don't sell at RoosRoast, will actually be weak no matter how you brew it because the flavor has been 'cooked' out.
I remember when I first started roasting coffee I would roast it really dark because I thought that's what I liked (3rd crack). I would take it into the Subaru dealership where I sold cars and put way too much coffee in the brew basket and make a pot and, guess what? It would taste weak! I couldn't understand it-- how could tons of dark roast coffee produce so little taste? Well, I had essentially roast the beans into little beads of charcoal. The coffee tasted like hot burned filtered water but of a coffee nature. In other words, the coffee was under extracted.
So the bottom line is, light or dark, how strong coffee tastes will depend on how much coffee you use per cup and how you make it. To use a phrase from my friend Shana at Shana Logic, "too flavory" or "not flavory enough"-- that's up to you!
Stay tuned to learn if you are brewing your RoosRoast the right way and meet some of the people we've turned into coffee drinkers.
Farmer Fund fundraiser at Grange Kitchen and Bar 9/26/10 - Monday, September 20th
Price of gold, Eh? Price of silver eh? How about coffee prices?
(Coffee is rocking a 13 year high.) Feel like you missed out on all the great investment chances? Afraid of toxic debt or another Bernie Madoff stealing all your money? Well, you don't have to be anymore because now you can invest in something that's close to home: Our local food movement and eating local 365 days a year.
Selma is working on a program called Farmer Fund to build hoop houses for local framers so they can in turn grow food all year long.
Gimme some arugula and kale I'll make a freaking smoothie!
Here is a word from Jeff and Lisa at Selma:
Selma Cafe is forming a local, socially responsible investment program to support our area farmers directly with funds from people in our community who want to use their assets in positive ways. Our weekly breakfast proceeds have allowed us to build 7 hoop houses (A hoop house is a green house capable of growing edible plants in all 4 of our climates) so far in SE Michigan. With the creation of this new program, we are opening up the possibility to join with our larger community to financially support building many more hoops in the coming years.
We are introducing this new Farmer Fund investment program at an upcoming fundraiser at The Grange Kitchen and Bar on Sunday, September 26, from 5-8p. Guests will enjoy appetizers, Michigan sparkling wine, and live music as they learn about our new program, investment opportunity, and exciting upcoming projects. Tickets for this event are $50. per person, with a tax deduction of half the ticket price.
So get on down to Grange Kitchen and learn more about investing in local food.
Where, oh, where at the Art Fair? - Tuesday, July 20th
You can tell by the way people are driving that it's art fair. It's not that they turn too slow or go too fast it's just that they're totally lost and more confused then normal. No amount of drugs or coffee can help. Just remember; You'd drive like that too if someone blocked your route with one of the nation's largest and longest running art fairs.

RoosRoast is your gateway drug. - Friday, June 18th
In this business people tell me their coffee woes all day long. If I hear one more story from somebody who bought coffee at Trader Joes and had to throw it away, I'm going to rent a plane and fly a banner across town proclaiming "know your roast date people!" As a self-proclaimed coffee doctor I always, of course, prescribe RoosRoast. This is across the board, the cure for everyone --from poverty-level grad students to SUV driving Republicans. We have blends and single origins to fit everybody's needs but most of all: we roast date our bags. We roast in small batches and we're not available in super stock stores who do the local-speak and greenwashing. And if you look closely, our coffee ounce per ounce is the finest gourmet deal around. We sell full pounds of premium coffee, not those puny 12 ounce bags.
This is the dope.
See you at the market tomorrow. We'll be drinking a high grown Columbian, one of my favorite coffees and sure to give you a nice well-rounded buzz for the day.
RoosRoast is your gateway drug to better coffee. Thanks for reading.
